Winding Oaks Farm, home to Melnyk Racing Stables, which was one of the top thoroughbred racing stables in North America during the height of its operation. The farm employed a staff of 90 and was home to over 380 thoroughbred horses including such notable legends as Archers Bay, winner of the 1998 Queen's Plate, the 1998 Prince of Wales Stake, and the 1998 Sovereign Award as Canada's top three-year old colt. Speightstown, the son of legendary Gone West, won the 2004 Breeders' Cup Sprint and the 2004 Sprint Eclipse Award. In 2005, Flower Alley won the Travers and in 2007, Marchfield won the Breeders' Stakes.
2007 brought another first for Eugene when his homebred filly Sealy Hill won the Sovereign Award for Horse Of The Year in Canada, 3 Year Old Filly of the Year, Female Turf Horse and became the first Canadian filly to win the Triple Tiara. Sealy Hill was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame in August 2013. Additionally, Melnyk Racing Stables won the Sovereign Award for 2007 Owner of The Year.
Additional Sovereign Awards include: in 2008 and 2009 Marchfield won Champion Older Male on the Main Track, in 2009 Eugene won Outstanding Breeder, Melnyk Racing Stable received the Outstanding Owner award and Pico Teneriffe was selected as Outstanding Broodmare, in 2012 Roxy Gap won as Older Female and Female Sprinter, and in 2013 Leigh Court won Champion Three Year Old Filly. In its last year of operation as a racing stable, Lukes Alley won the 2014 Sovereign Award for Champion Older Male and Hillaby won as Champion Female Sprinter.
Graded Stakes winners amongst the Winding Oaks stable include: Arch Hall, Bishop Court Hill, Bridgetown, Fisher Pond, Flower Alley, Gemswick Park, Gouldings Green, Graeme Hall, Harlington, Harmony Lodge, Host (CHI), Indian Vale, James Street, Karibu Gardens, Leigh Court, Lodge Hill, Lukes Alley, Marchfield, Marley Vale, Pico Teneriffe, Pool Land, Roxy Gap, Sealy Hill, Speightstown, Sterwins, Stratford Hill, Strong Hope and Tweedside.
Eugene's achievements and meritorious contributions to the sport of thoroughbred racing led him to be named the co-recipient of the 2002 Joe Palmer Award issued by the National Turf Writers Association. In 2005, Eugene was awarded TOBA's National Owner of the Year Award. In 2014, Eugene retired from the sport after more than 20 years. In August of 2017, Eugene was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall Of Fame.
